Youth In & Alumni From Care

In Canada, there are over 80,000 children and youth in the care of child welfare system alone. An additional 25,000 youth are in detention centres and youth justice facilities. Countless more are in mental health institutions. And there are thousands more who have fallen through the cracks in the system and are living on the streets and in shelters.

In only 5 years, the number of children and youth living “in care” – in the child protection system -- has increased almost 70%. That’s one out of 50 Canadian children and youth.

1.2 million “alumni” over the age of 18 have been in care at some point in their life.

Many of these young people live without adequate nurturing and stability. They are unable to heal from the situations they come from.

Canadians want more for their children. Why should youth in care receive less?

Canada needs all its young people to succeed and to take their rightful place in society. That has become even more important with an aging population.
